Signs Your Child May Need Executive Function Coaching

🎯

Knows the material but can’t perform

Your child understands concepts when explained but struggles to complete assignments independently or forgets what they learned by test time.

📋

Chronic disorganization

Lost papers, forgotten assignments, messy backpack, can’t find what they need despite your best organizational systems.

Time management struggles

Homework that should take 30 minutes takes 3 hours. Rushes through assignments at the last minute or can’t get started at all.

🔔

Needs constant reminders

You find yourself repeatedly reminding them to do things they “should know by now” like checking their planner or packing their backpack.

😤

Frustration and emotional dysregulation

Meltdowns over homework, giving up easily, or saying “I’m stupid” when they’re actually quite capable.

🧠

ADHD diagnosis (or suspected ADHD)

Your child has been diagnosed with ADHD or displays ADHD-like symptoms, but medication alone isn’t solving the academic challenges.

If you’re nodding along to several of these, your child likely needs support building executive function skills—not just content tutoring.

“My son has ADHD and we’d tried three different tutors before finding Rei. The difference? Rei didn’t just help him with homework—she taught him HOW to manage his time, organize his materials, and actually use the planner we’d bought him. For the first time, he’s independently getting his work done. We finally have our evenings back!”

Is This the Support Your Child Needs?

If your child is smart but struggling, disorganized despite multiple reminders, or has ADHD but traditional tutoring hasn’t helped—executive function coaching might be the missing piece.

Executive function skills are the mental processes that help us plan, focus, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks. They’re the foundation of academic success—yet they’re rarely taught in school. When these skills are underdeveloped, even the brightest students can struggle.

The Knowledge Tree Philosophy

Knowledge is like a tree: without a strong trunk, the branches can’t thrive. I start by understanding where your child is coming from—what foundational executive function skills are missing or underdeveloped. Only then do I introduce strategies that will actually stick.

This means we don’t jump straight to advanced planners or complex study systems. We build the cognitive foundation first: working memory, cognitive flexibility, impulse control, task initiation. Then we layer strategies on top of that foundation—strategies your child can actually use independently.

Our Approach

Building executive function skills through a personalized, foundation-first process designed for ADHD and EF challenges.

1.

Foundation Assessment

We begin by identifying which executive function skills need strengthening—working memory, cognitive flexibility, impulse control, or task initiation. This allows us to target specific areas and build from the ground up.

2.

Personalized Strategy

Based on the assessment, I create customized systems for organization, time management, focus, and task completion that work with your child’s brain, not against it. Every strategy is tailored to their unique challenges.

3.

Active Skill Building

We don’t just talk about organization—we practice it with real homework, real projects, real life. Skills are built through doing, with me as the coach and guide. Students learn by applying strategies immediately.

4.

Progress Monitoring

I provide ongoing feedback with families and conduct regular evaluations to track progress, refine strategies, and ensure continued growth. We adjust our approach as your child develops new capabilities.

With this process, we build strong foundations—not quick fixes—creating lasting executive function skills that help students thrive independently in school and beyond.

What Results Can You Expect?

Executive function coaching isn’t a quick fix—it’s a transformation that takes time. But here’s what families typically see within 3-6 months:

Greater Independence

Your child starts managing their own work without constant parental oversight. Less nagging, more autonomy.

📁

Improved Organization

Materials are where they need to be. Assignments get turned in. The backpack chaos becomes manageable.

⏱️

Better Time Management

Homework gets done more efficiently. Long-term projects don’t become last-minute panic sessions.

💪

Increased Confidence

When students develop the skills to manage their work, they believe in themselves again. This is often the biggest transformation.

🏠

Reduced Family Stress

Homework battles decrease. Your relationship with your child improves because you’re not constantly in enforcer mode.

🚀

Transferable Skills

The strategies we build aren’t just for 8th grade math—they work in college, careers, and life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is your tutoring different from homework help or quick-fix tutoring? +
Many tutors help students complete tonight’s assignment and call it a day. I diagnose underlying gaps in understanding, teach concepts from the foundation up, and build independent problem-solving skills. The goal is lasting understanding, not just finishing homework.
Do you only tutor struggling students, or can you help students who want to excel? +
Both! I work with students across the full spectrum—from those who are behind and need to catch up, to high-achievers who want to deepen their understanding and get ahead. My approach adapts to meet each student where they are.
How often should my child meet with you? +
Most students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. Students who are significantly behind might need more frequent sessions initially, while students maintaining good grades might meet weekly or bi-weekly. We’ll discuss the best schedule during your consultation.
Where do tutoring sessions take place? +
I offer both in-person tutoring (at your home, a library, or another convenient location in Burlingame, San Mateo, or Hillsborough) and online tutoring via Zoom. Many families find online tutoring just as effective and more convenient for scheduling.
Can you help with multiple subjects? +
Absolutely! I tutor all core subjects from elementary through high school. Many students work with me on multiple subjects, which allows me to see patterns in their learning and provide more integrated support.
How long does tutoring take to show results? +
Many students see improvements within 4-6 weeks of consistent sessions—better test scores, increased confidence, more efficient homework completion. However, rebuilding foundational gaps takes time. Long-term tutoring (a semester or more) typically produces the most dramatic and lasting results.
Do you offer test prep (SAT, ACT, AP exams)? +
While my primary focus is subject mastery and skill-building, I can incorporate test prep strategies into our sessions. If your student needs intensive, specialized test prep, I can recommend resources or adjust our approach to include targeted practice.
